Our Gems
Melissa
Growing up, I studied my father, a finish carpenter and cabinetmaker. I saw the skill and care that went into each piece. Every detail was painstakingly thought out and every angle precise. This is when I first realized how important hand-craftsmanship is.
I was first introduced to jewelry production in high school. During this time, I developed a passion for drawing and painting and soon became interested in sculpture and three-dimensional forms. I continued my art studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and as a junior I was offered an incredible opportunity with a custom jewelry gallery. I jumped at the chance to work with such skilled artisans and I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1989. I continued working for the gallery for 10 years, advancing from metal polisher to one of their most accomplished designers. While employed there, I was pleased to win several design awards from The Wisconsin Jewelers Association. In 1998, I moved to North Carolina to start my own business and focus on my original goal – to design and produce one-of-a-kind creations for my clients.
A thought, a line in architecture, or the curve of a body stirs me into drawing. I sketch my designs out completely before I begin any gold work. This process allows me to focus on the asymmetry within each piece and to plan each element with balance and proportion.
Each year I travel to hand pick all the unusual stones used in my work. My work focuses on the characteristics of the individual stones and I design for their protection, wearablity and beauty. I strive for asymmetrical balance within each piece. I’ve refined my process over the years to create truly wearable and beautiful pieces of jewelry.
I am available for custom appointments on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Kathy
Kathy joined the MDJ team in 2018 as a part-time salesperson, looking to rejoin the work force after raising her two sons. With her experience in retail and stringing work, and a genuine interest in growing her knowledge of the jewelry industry, she was a perfect fit for Melissa’s team. She soon became a full-time team member, and now serves as our gallery manager. She has completed several courses with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and continues her virtual studies there with the goal of becoming a Graduate Gemologist and adding even more value to the business and our client experience. Kathy is a transplanted New Englander, and has lived in North Carolina since 2001.
Nadine
Nadine joined the MDJ sales team in 2022. An accomplished jewelry artist herself, she brings creative energy and a unique combination of product and fabrication knowledge to our team.
Scherri

Sheree joined the MDJ sales team in 2025, where she has been able to combine her love for gems with hands-on experience in the jewelry world. Growing up in the foothills of Utah, she developed an early fascination with rocks – often cracking them open just to discover the beauty hidden inside. That childhood curiosity grew into a lifelong passion for collecting and learning about minerals and gemstones. Her journey from a rock colleting kid to jewelry professional has only strengthened her appreciation for the natural beauty and stories within every stone.
Amy
Amy joined the MDJ sales team in 2024, after we opened our new gallery space on King Street. After 26 years as a sales engineer in corporate America in a male-dominated industry, Amy is leaning into her softer side in this micro-retirement phase. She is a Hillsborough resident, part-owner of Durham favorite The Velvet Hippo, dance-mom, and dog-mom. We’re thrilled to have her on board!
Gladys
